‘66 Supro “00” Supreme

Great Zep I sounds with a Tele, so super clean while showing appropriate wear, inside and out. Freshly broken in Mojotone Anthem 10 Alnico speaker, perfect with the 6973 output section. It is not versatile like a Princeton Reverb. It is not chimey in the crunch like a Vox. It is snarky, mean, raw, juvenile delinquent rock and roll above noon, surprisingly jazzy and full before edge of breakup. 

Recapped with Hayseed Hamfest cap can and various out of spec caps and resistors replaced. Biased for 120v wall power. I made a mod to the preamp where half of the 12ax7 in the preamp normally sits unused. The first input is stock, second is the other half of the 12ax7 biased a little hotter and with a smaller 5uf bypass cap. Third input is both sides in parallel (like jumpering a tweed amp’s inputs) for about 30% more gain, really nice liquid tones from this channel with volume at breakup with the trade off of a slightly higher noise floor at idle. There is work that could be done to dial back the normal Supro heater noise, but with such a clean chassis I haven’t wanted to do anything beyond the reversible preamp mod and maintenance work. Also has had death cap removed, 3-prong cord added the right way, strain relief in chassis and cab.
